1955 Bel Air Power Glide Issue

Asked by Jan 19, 2014 at 06:26 PM about the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I think the Power Glide on my 1055 Be Air is about to go. Clunks hard going into gear, and doesn't shift smooth at all. I have the 235 6 cylinder engine. Can anyone recommend a rebuilder or where I can buy a re-built tranny?  Thanks.

Powerglides need to have the bands adjusted every 12 months or 12,000 miles. Get a factory shop manual for instructions on how to properly do this. I seriously doubt any transmission shop or repair facility will be able to do this without detailed instructions. As for the clunking, check the driveshaft universal joints. Sounds like they're worn.
