My car was stolen and I got it back but the thief still has one key and I have the other. Can the Equinox and my key be reprogrammed so the other key won't work for the thief if he comes back?

That would be a great question for your local Chevy dealership's service department, wouldn't it? Call and ask them.

I suppose that would be the same for almost all questions on here.

Bob is right. Dealers are best equipped to handle security system issues.

I guess it is easier to post questions on here asking strangers that may or may not have the correct answer. Calling the dealership's service department is relatively easy, painless and won't cost a thing. Talking to an informed service writer should yield the correct answer. If his or her answer is not what you want then ask to speak to the service manager.

Since nobody on here seems to know, I researched it and found out so I'll now answer my question so others can learn. The vehicle and the keys (the one I still have plus a new one) can be reprogrammed so that the key that the thief has will not start the car. Now we all know.

The key probably will still open the door.................................

I'm not a programmer so I never thought I could do it; I asked if it can be done.

How did the thief get your keys? Your insurance might pay for the repairs but in this case you let the thief get your keys so maybe not.

I already asked and they'll only pay for a key; seems stupid to me. The police are worried that the thief may come back.

What did you do, steal it back?!? Seriously, you're not going to be able to reprogram the key without a trip to the dealer. AND you're going to need proof of registration, insurance, and I.D. to get them to do it for liability reasons.

I picked it up at the police station today. They found it yesterday and "processed it" (sprayed black liquid all over the place instead of dust like they use to do). They parked it inside overnight so it would dry. I dropped it off at the dealer and they are reprogramming it tomorrow. $190 including one new key/remote and all reprogramming.
