I have a 2000 Dodge Durango and when I gently press on the brake pedal my brakes lock up as if I slammed on them what could cause this to happen

Probably a bad caliper(s), the pads are metal to metal, master cylinder is bad or one or both of the rear shoes have brake fluid or worse rear end fluid on them. Take it to a REPUTABLE mechanic. This is a safety thing for you, your passengers and the people around you and the road.
