Left my car running for 5 hours

Asked by Jun 14, 2016 at 04:16 PM about the 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I left my car running while at work for approx 5
hours this morning. I have no idea how this
happened. When I got in my cat after work, my
lights on the dash were on and I couldn't believe it!
My temp gauge showed 1/4 the way and I had
about a 1/4 tank of gas. Could I have damaged my
car?

I won't hurt anything. Police cars and Taxi Cabs idle and run all day long.

Yes, it is really hard to say what could go wrong cause there are so many things that can happen. Exhaust system overheating, engine overheating from failed cooling system or oiling system, ignition system components can fail due to excess under hood temps,it's a real can of worms.

I doubt the exhaust will get overheated on a properly operating car....http://www.cartalk.com/content/idling-long-periods-might-not- damage-your-car-there-are-other-reasons-why-its-lousy-idea.
