Why does nothing happen when I turn the key?

Dashboard, guages, radio interior lights and windows will work just fine but the car will not turnover. Nothing but silence. 3-5 times later and she starts right up. Any suggestions?

A quick test is to take a hammer and lightly tap on the solenoid a few times and try to start it up. Sounds to me like the starter is on its way out and can be done without warning.
