Toyota Truestart battery

Asked by Komal Jan 01, 2023 at 08:47 AM about the 2013 Toyota RAV4 Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My question is in regards to battery
replacement frequency. I have had to replace
my car battery in August 2020 then again in
August 2021 and now again in December
2022. The Toyota dealership where I have
taken my car for the repair states that it is due
to a bad battery cell. Just wanted to see if I
should get an opinion from a different
mechanic? I don’t think a car battery should
have to be replaced three times in less than
three years. The car is driven approximately
20 miles a day to work

A modern battery should last 3-5 years based on average use, which yours is. For your net replacement, look around for a type that fits your car and provides to highest cold cranking amps (CCA). Don't know how your Toyota shop determined you had a bad cell on more than one occasion bu I would go to a different store in your area that carries batteries. Even Walmart sells a decent battery for your car and will install it. Maybe your dealership has not been completely honest with you. It happens.

Go get a new battery from a reputable shop - and skip the Toyota dealership. Their diagnosis is sketchy and smacks of selling you something they will not prove is defective. A battery should last 3-5 years under normal conditions and yours seems to be typical use. Even Walmart sells a decent battery and will do the installation. There are others out there so avoid the dealership that keeps telling you to buy a new battery and buy it somewhere else. Look for the correct size (store will help with this) and look for the battery with the highest CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) rating.
