2001 Dodge Dakota at idle will sometimes run rough

Asked by Mar 09, 2015 at 09:42 AM about the 2001 Dodge Dakota 2 Dr SLT 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 4.7L V8 and sometimes when idling at a stoplight the RPMs
will drop below 500 and then jump really fast to above 1500, also when driving at speeds
between 45-60 mph my RPMs would drop to 1000 but once you get above 65ish mph the
RPMs would go back to normal.   Could this be a vacuum leak

Yes, check for vac leaks and scan the computer for stored codes.

My 4.7 in a Jeep (same engine) started doing the same thing then it just died going down the highway, replace both the cam and crank sensors problem disappeared. And by all means get the codes checked, you could have an ISC also going bad or dirty.
