2002 Durango won't crank
I have a 2002 Dodge Durango 4.7 that
won't crank, particularly when it's hot. All
power turns on, but it won't actually start
for about an hour. It seems to happen more
when it's hot out, but I can't find any
correlating factors with it. Runs fine &
always starts up eventually, just takes
awhile. I also have other odd electrical
issues such as the speedometer/odometer
not working, ABS light on, back some light
not turning off (I had to remove it), etc.
could this be an issue with the fuse box
under the hood or certain fuses? I'm not
extremely mechanically inclined could it's
possible I'm missing something big.
That's supposed to say dome light, not some light
The most common failure on an engine that "won't crank hot" is a starter. However I have experienced this particular engine that when the crank sensor goes wacky it acts like the timing is way too far advanced and can be confused with a starter motor. So i just want to make sure yours just make a loud click when turned to the crank position. You really need to have the codes pulled just too find out if you have anything else that is failing like the VSS, that can cause the speedometer not to operate.
It makes no sound when the keys turned. I'll get the codes ran.
If it make absolutely no sound you may have an ignition or safety switch problem but they usually act up most of the time not just hot, next time it fails try hitting the starter with a small hammer while someone holds the key in the crank position, if it cranks over and starts then for sure you have a bad starter.
