5.9 Magnum loses oil pressure

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota with a 5.9 360
magnum. It burns some oil(about 1 quart a month)
and has almost 170000 miles. After working hard
i.e pulling a trailer or romping it and the rpm drops
the check gages light comes on and i see that
there is no oil pressure.

Sounds like one tired engine, too much bearing clearances through out the entire engine, oil pressure will drop the warmer it gets. Time for an overhaul or replacement.

It's possible that the oil pump is worn out. But I'd bet that if you ran a compression test, you'd find low and uneven compression, which proves the previous poster's theory, your entire engine is just worn out.
