Chevy Equinox Problems

Asked by Jan 20, 2017 at 07:54 PM about the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox LS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My husband and I come from a long line of GM lovers. We both own a chevy and buy a new one every four to five years. However, I don't think that is going to continue after purchasing this car. I have a 2012 Chevy equinox and like everyone else discovered it is one of these cars that Chevy knows has an issue yet we never got the memo.  My husband is diligent in changing oil and do maintenance, yet just as this car hits over 106,000 miles one morning on my way to work in the bitter cold -30 degrees it decides to stop on me in the middle of the highway.  We discover the rear main seal has blown to the tune of $1200.  After fixing this, funking things are happening with the electronics and setting off codes. Our mechanic tells us that the oil leak from the rear of the engine was a known issue in this car. Chevy is aware of and that this caused the rear seal to blow.  The compression in the motor is now high and it could happen again and he has to troubleshoot why it is happening??? Who is going to pay for my repair bill, GM should go good for this when they know this was a problem. It should have been a recall. What is the 800 number, I would like to call them..?

Something is wrong here. Cars don't shut off because of a bad rear main seal. It will leak oil bad, but not stop running unless you lock up the motor by tuning it dry. Also the only way to have pressure behind a rear main to blow it out is excessive blow by or a faulty pcv system, it's usually that second reason. Also to replace a rear main seal your transmission has to be dropped, if your having electrical issues then your mechanic is most likely to blame if they happened only after the repair. Something must have been missed.

Make sure the PCV is venting properly. You might also want to see what the oil pressure is. I would use a mechanical gauge to see if it is really high for some reason. Good luck taking on GM. https://www.gm.com/site-help/contact-us/email-us.html
