I have an 86 Dodge Ram 150 with a 318 and it idles fine and I can hold it wide open in park with no problems but when I Drive down the road and accelerate or give it gas to pull a hill it backfires and misses I have a repair manual I was just wondering if anybody would I have a good idea where to start first cause it has about ten different causes

Try replacing the idle air control valve (IAC). Make sure the pintal is the same length as the one you took out, it is adjustable.
