2004 dodge durango engine swap

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 dodge durango with a 5.7l hemi. The
engine blew a rod a couple months ago so it needs
a whole new engine. I don't know much about
mechanics so I was wondering if I can put a 4.7l in
it? I don't need a hemi and honestly it'll be a lot
cheaper if I can go with a 4.7. Is it possible?

you'll have to swap a lot more than the motor if you switch to a 4.7, which will incur additional expenses, however hemi motors are harder to come by and as you've no doubt noticed, cost a lot more. So it's possible, but expect to swap over transmission, harnesses, computer/sending units, etc.

Yikes. I knew that I would need to change the wiring harness and have the computer reprogrammed but I didn't think I'd need to change the transmission. I figured if I pulled a 4.7l out of an automatic 4x4 like mine it would match up.

You'll have to consult a shop manual to see if they can bolt up, as upgrading a 4.7 to a 5.7 is popular and there are a number of guides out there on how to do it, I think certain years the bolt patterns on both work for the same trans. The 03-06 wiring harnesses are mostly the same, however the computer connection varies year to year. Swapping to a 5.9 would be out tho tranny-wise, different pattern altogether. You're 04 is a PCI bus for communication, anything 06 and later uses CAN bus. Get on a good Dodge forum, you'll find some engine-swap guides.
