Advice Needed - Car Sitting For 4 Years

Asked by Steven Oct 22, 2021 at 09:40 AM about the 2009 Honda Accord Coupe EX-L V6 with Nav

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2009 Honda Accord Coupe that I parked nearly 4 years ago.  When
parked I know that was close to the time for an oil change and I'd estimate a
quarter tank of gas.  I have also disconnected the battery.  I am not a car guru,
which is why I am asking on here.  What is recommended to get the thing back
on the road and going?  Tips and advice welcome please.

The gas tank needs to be removed and cleaned along with the rest of the fuel line purged , fresh oil and a cold crank ( crank without spark ) to prime the motor and it may fire right up , Turn key to run and then off 3-5 times before starting it , listen for the fuel pump .

Replace the battery. Drain the gas tank and refill it with fresh gasoline and a bottle of Drygas. Check your fluids and top off as needed. Check the belts, hoses, brake lines, and tires. If anything is dry rotted it will need to be replaced (tires, belts, hoses). Then start it up and let it run for about an hour. If it's an automatic transmission, run the shifter through all the gears a few times. Then shut it off and change the oil and filter. Once you take it back on the road drive moderately and listen for strange noises and be alert for strange smells too. Hopefully the brake rotors will not be too rusty, but if they are, they'll have to be replaced. Your first few brake applications may be a little funky. But once you stop a few times they should be ok. So, as I said, drive moderately at first. If the brakes continue to be not right, further inspection will be needed. Hope that helps! Jim
