I am looking to buy a 1984 325e. The problem is the engine has 294xxx miles on it. i was just wondering how long do the engines actually last until before they are absolutely done and need replacing?

Probably around now you'll be looking at rebuilding the engine. Have it compression checked if you really are interested. What about the rest of the car? Suspension, transmission, rear differential, rust? I'd look at something else. You're looking at a money pit.
