selling without title in hand

Asked by Guru21X3S Mar 13, 2020 at 08:54 PM about the 2012 MINI Countryman S FWD

Question type: Car Selling & Trading In

I have a listing up.  How do you handle my sale if I still owe the bank?  I just
lost a sale due to someone only wanting to pay cash and get a title
immediately.  I need to know what to tell people.  Thank you.

Contact your bank about the sale, they may issue you a copy of the certificate of title that can be signed over to a buyer so they can at least get a temporary tag (in those states that require them), which will allow them to drive the car with proof of ownership while you pay the remaining balance off and get the official title to send to them. That can take up to a month. You just have to be clear with the buyer about the process. Again, contact your bank and ask how this should be handled, they've done it thousands of times. Some impatient buyers may be turned off by the whole process and will go seek a car elsewhere, but people who buy slightly used cars know that these are likely still under lien so will accommodate you.
