2012 Audi Q5 won't start after sitting in the sun for an hour or more

Asked by Laurie Jul 06, 2022 at 08:14 PM about the 2012 Audi Q5 2.0T quattro Premium Plus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our 2012 Audi Q5 2.0 Quatro (114K miles) would not start. I called AAA and
they stated the battery was dead. They replaced the battery. Five days later
it would not start again. I took it to the Audi dealer who ran a diagnostic and
determined the alternator and starter were fine. The spark plugs were
replaced three months ago. They determined that the battery AAA installed
was not the correct one, and was not correctly coded to the car. They
replaced the battery with the correct one and coded it to the car. Two days
later the car would not start again. It starts every time it is in the garage or in
a cool place. It does not start if outside in the sun for any length of time. We
can get it to start by simultaneously stepping on the brake and then giving it
gas. That works, but is not a solution. The Audi dealer is baffled. They can't
find any codes when running the diagnostic. We recently moved to a high
elevation (5,900) and the problem started shortly thereafter. We only use
premium gas and have also tired adding an octane booster and a fuel
cleaner. We need some help figuring this thing out. Thanks!

If it's been to the dealer with their technicians what can you expect from us ? Look for any obvious wiring problems , corrosion , loose connections , start with the ECM , poke around , something is getting warm creating short , Stepping on the brake and gas makes me think it's the ECM , Almost sounds like you're making it up , bizarre

Believe me, I wish I was making this issue up. It is ridiculous and frustrating. We have found lots of out of the ordinary issues on the site and thought we might get lucky with someone else having the same issue. We have checked for any obvious problems and just don't see anything. We are now taking it back to the dealer to see if they can duplicate the problem. The soonest we could get it in again is July 26, so we have to wait a few weeks. It doesn't happen when it's in their service bay, so we told them to leave it parked in the lot and let it heat up. Hopefully they can duplicate the problem and figure it out. In the meantime, my transportation is unreliable, which is very tough.

Hi Laurie we have the same issue with our 2012 Audi not starting in the heat. Since it’s been fall/winter we have not had any issues but with this unusually hot spring here in Calgary it has already happened a couple of times. We are on a mission to solve this so let’s keep in touch with any solutions! Kate

The Audi dealer finally determined that we were having a problem with our fuel pump and the fuel sensor. They replaced the fuel pump and then two days later we had to return. They replaced the fuel sensor and that solved the problem. The battery appears to have been an ancillary issue. The whole issue started after we moved to a high altitude state. Hopefully the problem has been resolved for good.

Did replacing the fuel sensor help the issue? I have the same issue with mine

Hi Melanie, Yes, per my previous post, we had to replace the fuel pump and the fuel sensor and that solved the issue!
