2004 Ford Escape Overdrive Switch on Gearshift Does Not Work.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When put in drive, my escape will shift up into overdrive fine.  If I try to shift down using the button on the end of the shifter, it does nothing.  I know the dash light is ok because it lights when starting the engine.  I just cannot shift down on the road using the button.  Any clues??  (Fuses are ok.)

The O/D button is to lock out 4th gear or overdrive and not downshift the transmission. Pushting the button while in overdrive will then not allow the transmission to go back into 4th gear once you slow down enough that it downshifts in 3rd gear or lower. HTH's.

I know what the button is for. Maybe I stated it wrong. My problem is the button is not working. When I push it, nothing happens, the "OD/OFF" light does not come on, and it does not lock out 4th gear. I need to know how to troubleshoot this problem. Thanks.
