it the switch in the off position or is it on

It can be caused by a sticking switch in the door. The doom light and door ajar switch is located by or incorporated into the interior part of the door handle. Get some penetrating oil, something with good lubricating qualities like Cyclo Break Away. Spray it into the space that houses the lock mechanism in the door. Soak it good. Slam the door repeatedly to loosen up the stuck switch. If it works breath a sigh of relief. If not then it could be a faulty switch. Good idea to lubricate the area occasionally to keep things free.
