i have the same thing, i think the best answer is just to trade it in and to never buy a ford again. i can't get any real answers from the dealer as to why it whines, it just is a noisy car. when i start it up, when i take off and when i drive at low speeds. my 2011 Ford Edge is noisy, sounds like the transmission but i don't really know and i am being told its a minimum of $100 to diagnose from the dealer that sold it to me.

2012 ford escape Power Steering Whine Noise? 1. there is no power steering pump on this model. 2. guessing it's the idler pulley or tension pulley that the bearing are going on one of them. 3. if your replacing one of them, avoid future trouble and replace both at the same time. Also if your serpentine belt has 50,000 or more miles on it I would suggest replacing that also. Seeing you have to remove it to replace those pulley's one less thing to have go wrong.

Had a whine or whistle on my 2010 2.5L sounded like a bad searing in the engine. Kept doing it until Friday when it threw the serpentine belt. New one is much thicker between the grooves. Old one very worn.

I also have a 2012 ford escape (4 Cylinder, Front wheel drive) that has a Whine Noise like a old worn power steering pump. Higher RPM gives a higher whine noise. I have replaced idler pulley, tension pulley, and the serpentine belt, all at the same time. Absolutely no change in the whine noise.

If the noise changes when you put it gear, try a trans flush. Transmission pump on these make a lot of noise. Low fluid level will cause this.
