Serpentine belt/alternator/wiring harness

Asked by Feb 07, 2016 at 09:46 AM about the 1996 Chrysler Sebring 2 Dr JXi Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The belt for my power steering broke, and
the main belt was extremely worn. The
mechanic did not disconnect the battery
when he went to replace the main belt. He
told me it "arched?" and melted part of my
starter wire, and it happened again two more
times after he replaced the first section.
Then he blew a fuse. When i left the battery
light came on and he said it is the alternator.
Im not a mechanic but i dont think it is the
alternator because he did not put the second
belt on the car and the power steering
worked when i left, and my radio comes on
automatically after the car is started but it
did not come on during the 5 minute ride
home. Does anyone know what he did and
how i fix it?

You need a new mechanic. Make sure both belts are on the car and have the wiring inspected, sounds like there was some damage done due to the arching. Battery light means a charging issue. Don't go back.
