what could be wrong with my car?

me and my husband bought a 1996 Chrysler sebring jxi in December of 2015.
we had it for a week and a half before the distributor went out. we just got it
back after a month and half. we put a full tank of gas in it and now its making
a sound like a truck does if its diesel and it smells weird this is our first car .
we dont understand

Sounds like it could be misfiring or maybe the exhaust has rusted loose. Can you give us some more info? Check engine light on?
