Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze that's 5 yrs. old and has only 5000 m. Is changing
the coolant really necessary? The manual says it is.

Officially yes, the coolant should be changed regardless of mileage each 5 years. The maintenance interval is time OR mileage, whichever comes first. However, I bought my '93 Chevy Caprice new and followed the maintenance schedule. The car was always dealer serviced. The coolant was changed every 2 years as per the maintenance schedule and I had never ending trouble with the cooling system. The radiator was replaced 3 times, hoses, water pump, and thermostat all needed replacement before the car had 100,000 miles on it. My '08 Grand Marquis, which I bought in 2012 with 31,000 miles on it, has never had a cooling system service. It now has 68,000 miles on it with all the original parts of the cooling system in place with no issues. Some will say it's neglect. I say, from personal experience, with cooling systems, if it works, don't fix it. By the time my Caprice was as old as the Grand Marquis it was on radiator number 2, third set of hoses and thermostat, and second water pump! HTH. -Jim
