What is wrong with my 2012 Chevy Traverse? It won't start and my check engine light was on the night before.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My wife was driving home.from work
when she realized that her check engine
light was on. She waited till she got
home to turn it off to check to see if it
goes away. We didn't recheck the car
until this morning and only to realize that
our car wont turn over. All lights came on
(including the check engine light) but it
just won't turn over. We didn't have time
to jump start to rule the batter out or the
alternator  but I am no mechanic but it
seems to me that out starter may have
went. Am I accurate?

Get the trouble code from the check engine light first. It could be a security system problem. You'll need a hand held code reader. Perhaps you can borrow one if you don't have one. In the meantime contact your local Chevy Dealer and see if your Traverse is involved in the many GM recalls with the ignition switch. If so, let them tow it in and fix it for free. Another thing to consider is if you have under 100,000 miles on the vehicle it's still covered by the 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty and, depending on when it was originally bought, you may still be covered by the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.
