alternator do i need oem

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my alternator was replaced sept 2022. It was not oem remanufactured by
Ultima. Everything I read says my car needs a oem alternator that is new AC
Delco. My car on 2 occasions said check charging system then went into
battery save mode. To correct this I take off negative cable off battery,
reconnect and everything is good. Do I need a new alternator?

If you keep doing the battery cable thing you will eventually damage the computers, so quit doing that. Take it back to where you had the work done you should have a warranty at least on parts, if this in under 90 days then most shops have a ninety warranty on labor also.

When they replaced the alternator the battery was disconnected. Most likely they didn't plug in a memory saver device so now the computer needs to be flashed (reprogrammed). If that's not the case, it's a very real possibility that you got a defective alternator. One other thing, how old is the battery? Have it load tested. If, after a full charge it fails the load test or tests questionable, replace it. Newer vehicles can be very fussy about battery voltages. Hope that helps! Jim
