Is there an easy way to cut power to cigarette lighters sockets?

Asked by Aug 25, 2015 at 12:13 AM about the 2005 Volkswagen Passat GLS 4Motion Wagon

Question type: General

Is there a simple way to cut the power to the cigarette lighter sockets when the key is
turned of and the doors locked? I run gps, hand-held radios and usb charger, via them,
but the sockets are live all the time, and do not 'time out' when doors are shut and locked.
Getting sick of jump starting a flat battery...................

Dig out the wiring diagrams, locate the feed wire to the power ports, and install a switch in the line, just make sure it can handle the load requirement, you can use a toggle or rocker switch whatever you would like.

Pull out the owners manual and see if there is a fuse for it

Youd have to consult the wiring diagram to run current to the lighters from a switched source. Funny, I prefer that my Passat operates this way.

Thanks Chris. (and others for your comments). In New Zealand and freezing temps, having two handheld radios, a phone and a computer plugged in while away from vehicle for a few hours..... not a good idea! Trying to get readable circuit diag. Cheers.
