Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My mom just bought a 2011 R/T AWD and is confused about the oil changes. the guys at the repair shop told her she only needs
to change it every 8k miles but today her change oil light came on after only 3000. whats the deal with that, whos right?

who ever told you to wait 8k before changes, is an idiot, with a capacity of only about 6 quarts, that vehicle doesnt have enough oil to hold the contaminants that can be aquired during a period of 8000 miles. not to mention very few oils (made for gas engines) are developed to hold there viscosity that long, also i cant think of many oil filters that will last that long either. tops id say change your oil at a max of atleast 5000 miles, 3000 miles is a good idea for that engine though in my opinion. but 8000 miles is simply rediculous.

6 quarts for 2nd Gen LX? 1st Gen LX takes 7.5 quarts. The oil change light usually comes on because it is programmed to remind the driver to change the oil every so many miles. 8k miles is ridiculous. 6k is pushing it if you are using full synthetic. I would change it every 3k if I wasn't using full synthetic.

i didnt read that it was an RT haha

The 3k oil change was established in 1955 so that should be discarded as most car companies recommend 8k and up. Just read the owners guide.Synthetic oil does not breakdown and technically all you really need to do is add more and change your oil filter every 5-9k miles. I usually just change both every 10k miles. There are kits but I've never looked into them. On your mothers car there is a sensor that can turn the change oil light on, either from moderate driving i.e., stop and go, dirty air, etc...or your initial break in period of 1k miles is known to throw metal slivers as the metal is establishing and marrying.

Manual says 6k on my RT and the guy who thinks 8k is rediculous I got 12k from synthetic out of my previous car, a Benz that this LX series was based upon. Same oil capacity. Manual on that said MINIMUM of 10k miles, oil sensors would dictate when it actually needed it based upon load and duty cycle.. Our LX's are made different, it is strict mileage, the first Oil Change is 3k, subsequent are 6k, strict mileage timer. If any work is done where the computer is reset it does the 3k, You can reset timer by turning ignition on, not start, push gas to floor for 1 second, release for 1 sec, do this 3 times then turn key off and back on.

Dealer told me to change only when oil change light comes on or every 6000 if it malfuntions - regular oil is ok but semi sy thetic is recomended in hemi Engines only 5w20 only oil

If you care about your car ignore the dealer and change it more often. 3k is good for regular oil and every 5k for synthetic.
