Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 2005 ford ranger 4x4 4.0 that the previous owner changed the rear differential but it was wrong gear so no the 4x4 hops when engaged. How do I determine what rear differential to install to match the front one? There is no door sticker. All I have is the VIN. Thanks

they probably did it wrong , have it pulled apart and fixed , don't drive it if it ain't right

That truck came with three different differential ratios: 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10. If you are lucky, you may find a tag on the front diff that will indicate the ratio. Or you can take the cover off and try to count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears, and divide it out. Most of the ones I've seen are 4.10 but I'm only guessing. Maybe if you go to a Ford dealer, the parts guy can interpret the VIN and tell the ratio. Correct....don't drive it in four wheel drive like that or you will bust up the transfer case or break a drive shaft. Another example of why morons should not own tools.

Thank you, I just found through VIN it should be a 4.10. Need to figure out how to get it back to that.

The easiest and cheapest way to do that is go to an auto parts store and buy the ring and pinion gear set for that ratio 4.10 and install it. I see them online for about $150 and you may need to but some shims and bolts and stuff like that. The whole axle new is about $1000 and that would unnecessary. Have your mechanic help you. When you're done you will have a nice truck cheap.
