My 2012 Mazda 5 gets terrible city gas mileage, only averaging 16.9 mpg at best. Do I have a lemon?
I mostly drive short trips in the city. The average mpg goes up slightly when I do some freeway driving, but nowhere near the mpg promised by Mazda. I purposely bought this smaller van for the fuel efficiency. Feeling duped.
With an average 24mpg - 16.9 on short trips is very normal. The indicated factory city mpg is tested in dry and a rolling road so it's very unlikely you will come close to that in normal driving. Also short trips will not help with the MPG as the engine will not reach optimum temperature.
I have a 2006 Mazda 5 and have been tracking my gas mileage for 2 years. I get an average 23 mpg with half of that in the city, half of that on the highway. My best gas mileage was 27 and my worst was 19. Based on my experience, 16.9 is very low - even in the city. Do you travel with a full car? Do you have the AC going all the time? Do you regularly check the fuel system? Do you travel with bikes on top of the car? There are lots of factors that might be affecting your fuel economy.
