Torque Converter

Asked by Kimberly Mar 08, 2019 at 09:31 PM about the 2012 FIAT 500 Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The torque converter wasn't seated correctly when the engine was replaced.  As a result, the engine seized up.  The transmission has been removed and now the engine turns over.  The service tech is stating that the torque converter damaged the front pump and whenever this occurs, he automatically recommends replacing the torque converter in addition to the front pump. Is there a way to tell if he is telling the truth about the pump? Does replacing the torque converter make sense?  Is there a way to test the torque converter to see if it needs to be replaced?

I recommend getting a new mechanic. The torque converter seated correctly when the engine was built, the mechanic has competency issues with this setup. The mechanic needs to pay for the damage. LX30215 is right, you should consult an expert, maybe not the person currently working on it.
