What does code p0420 mean

I really feel bad to tell you this, but you have an issue with your catalytic convertor system. The best thing that you can do at this point is to just ignore the check engine if your issue is just the convertor. It makes no sense to replace this costly item.


Unless the converter is clogged, or the catalyst has been overheated from misfiring or another engine issue and melted. This will cause the exhaust system to become restricted. A restricted exhaust system will cause drivability problems and possible engine damage over the long run. In my opinion it's best to replace it. Just be sure you don't have any engine problems that caused the converter to fail. If your engine is ok, you can save a few bucks by getting a universal converter. Just be sure you get the correct one for the emissions system that's on your vehicle. The emissions decal under the hood will tell you if you have Federal Emissions, California Emissions, Northeastern Emissions, etc. HTH. -Jim
