Serpentine (fan belt) is heating up from a seized up pulley bearing or locked up A/C compressor. Have the hood open. Soon as you turn off the engine, touch the belt carefully to see if it's smoking hot. If you want to release the spring loaded tensioner and remove the belt, you can check all the pulleys by hand to see which one is dragging. When checking the A/C compressor you will want to turn the inner hub to actually feel what the compressor is doing. The outer pulley must also turn freely. Remember to sketch the route the belt takes so you get it back on correctly. Might be a diagram/sticker under the hood somewhere. Sometimes an oil drip can smell like rubber when it hits something hot. Check it out soon.

It can occur when there are drops of oil on hot engine parts. Check the engine oil level weekly. With the engine cold, try to fill the engine radiator with cooler. It does not matter if, when you remove the cap, you see that it is full. Try anyway. Inspect your car underneath looking for dripping oils. You must wash the engine underneath first. Good luck.

I am also having this same issue with my 2011 Nissan Murano S AWD and was curious what the outcome was? Along with cost? I am taking it into the mechanic on Monday (3 days from now) and really just want to know what to expect. Thanks.

I'm having the same issue with my 2017 Murano. Less than 30,000 miles. I took it to the dealership last week and was told nothing is wrong. The smell was so bad in the backseat my kids had to put their windows down yesterday. Taking it back to dealership next week and I will not leave until they tell me what's going on.

So it turned out to be my alternator. My brake light and battery light both popped on at the same time and then I was able to drive for another 15 minutes before the car completely shut down. I was told this is a common issue (for some dumb reason) with Muranos so you may want to see about that before driving much more. Mine quit on me in the middle the road and I had to get it towed to the dealership. Very expensive to replace too.
