Steering col

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One day I went to eat in my 94 deville and once I walked out
to the car I could start but couldn't disengage from park.
Shifter was stuck in park. Ended up breaking shifter knob
trying. Popped the hood and moved the shifter link and
drove home fine. Now 3 weeks later it won't start at all. No
power.... any ideas to the problem? I bought the column
already but still have no clue to what happened in the first
place and if that's why it won't start.

There's a shift release solenoid that's hooked up to the brake switch. This prevents you from shifting out of park unless your foot is on the brake pedal. You could have turned your ignition one click clockwise, stepped on the brake so the vehicle wouldn't roll, shifted to neutral and started the car! The solenoid is on top of the steering column near the ignition switch and headlight dimmer switch. HTH. -Jim
