how can i replace driver, side mirror, can I pull the mirror off or do I have to remove the whole assembly?

you will see a panel when you open the door on the inside that lines up with the mirror. remove that triangle access panel and there will be 3 nuts, if its a power mirror, you will have a wire harness that needs to be unplugged,sometimes the door panel may need to be replaced to get to the plug. then just pull the mirror off from outside. install in reverse.

I dont want to replace the whole unit, I have just the glass and the plate that the glass is in. Can i just replace the glass without taking the whole thing apart?

some you can yes, but tricky,and breaking the pivots is hard to avoid. but if you get past that,then snapping it back in in another challenge, the chance of you cracking the glass is high.bottom line its very difficult if you never did it before, but you don't learn if you don't try.
