knocking sound that sounds like #1 cyl rod bearing. someone said its carbon build up?

Carbon in today's engines is rare, I have only seen it one time and that car was only driven at the most 1 mile a day, but it never really knocked, just got very sluggish, O2 codes, EGR plugging up, stuff like that, so I really doubt it is carbon.
