My radio itself seems to be working-it will scan channels, but I can't hear it. I tried turning it on and off and also restarting the car. I tried the volume on the wheel as well as the knob. Help!

For the 05 BMW 530i you have, it sounds like the stock amplifier has given up on you. Please, first, check all of the fuses to make sure none of them are burnt out and replace with the appropriate ones. After you check the fuses, make sure no one has tried to tamper with any radio wiring (check harnesses on back of stereo) if all looks good, then, I bet it is the Amp that has burnt away. In that case, I'd recommend purchasing a used one and replacing yourself - will save you over 500$ if you go to dealer! :)
