The Final Stage Unit (FSU) needs to be replaced. This is a rather common failure with our e39 chassis. The FSU is a resistor/heat sink that controls the blower speed of the ventilation system. When this unit fails, the blower speed cannot be controlled (completely shuts down in your case) by the clinmate control panel. Fortunately, BMW has since come up with a sturdier direct replacement. This part costs around CAD$85 and is a very simple DIY job. Follow this link for detailed instructions: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143393 and be sure to have your physiotherapist's phone number handy as your neck may need attention.

Another question. Where can I find this part? And is it easy to install?
