2001 530i let oil low, stalled, smoked, now drives, no smoke. permanent damage or no?
hello. my 2001 530i stalled, didnt start, eventually started and accelerated
to around 4000 rpms, with lots of blueish smoke out the pipe. upon
inspection i realized it was running dry on oil. after adding 4 qt of oil i drove
it and it smoked for 2 miles, but next 20 miles car barely smokes and still
no check engine light or any warning lights. im wondering if permanent
damage has been done? can it be checked relatively easy? what would it
cost to rebuild? im in massachusetts. thanks
Might be the Crankcase valve and hoses that are faulty and or blocked, one of the symptoms is high consumption of oil. Get the car into a BMW independent mechanic so they can take a look at it ASAP, keep checking the oil level in the meantime. Running that low on oil it's hard to say if any real damage was done. Hope for the best. To install a new or rebuild engine will be more than what the car is worth.
update- after driving for 50 miles today, check engine light came on and car does smoke especially if driven 30 mph+. not constantly, but smells bad. barely noticeable if just idling.
