my bmw 528i goes up to the hot area and says it is over heating yet when i feel the hoses and the top eng. covers, not like it should be, if hot . seems real safe.where to start on diagnostic

Let it cool down and open the cap to the expansion tank and see if the coolant is at the proper level. I sususpect your low on coolant. Might also be a failed thermostat.
