I have a 1998 BMW 540i,twice i have notice twice when i put my car in rever se it kind of hesitate.what do you think is wrong.The check engine light is not on.

I'd put a jack under the drivetrain...and see if the rubber mounts have separated...chances are the geometry is good...but the "home" positions are off~...if the mounts are deteriorated~

Check the trans fluid level and add to specs if low, also look at the color and the smell if the color is dark and it smells burnt it maybe already too late, but get it serviced as it couldn't hurt.
