Is it common for BMW 325i Side airbags to deploy at random?

Asked by Oct 27, 2015 at 07:44 PM about the 2001 BMW 3 Series 325i Sedan RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was exiting the freeway slowing down to
about 30-35 mph and suddenly, the airbags
deployed at random.  When the airbags
deployed, it hit my head causing me to drive
a little to the left where the curbside was. I
then scraped my rims on the left side of the
car and steering went a little off alignment.
Can someone answer me if this is common
in E46 325i's

No it is not common for them to go off without hitting something, did you hit a pot hole when it done this,if not it was a faulty air bag switch.

Hope your head feels better. I've heard of airbags going off in the past. What a lot of people don't realize is that airbags are a maintainable item and at sometime in their life they do need to be replaced. May sound crazy but look into it, many cars have airbag lights that come on and typically it's because the unit has gone beyond its usefulness. The light coming on is the manufacturers way of eliminating responsibility. Technology is not always a cup of tea.

Before the airbags deployed I did not run over any pot holes or any debris that was in the middle of the road

Normally 2 things have to happen for the airbags to deploy. First, a sharp decrease in vehicle speed. Second, impact. I'd have the vehicle looked at by your local BMW Dealership. Sounds like your car is unsafe! Who knows if the other airbags will deploy without warning! HTH. -Jim

I just recently heard about a 5 series around the same year that had the side airbags deploy at random. The seller of the car said that it was the Giubo joint in the drive shaft, and it was knocking really bad. Apparently, it was bad enough to deploy the airbags. I very rarely say this, but I'd bring the car to the dealer and have them check it out. Very odd for that to happen.
