You can get into reverse when slowly moving if you press the clutch without grind. But you should start by checking the linkage, but you will need to get it up into the air for that. If everything checks out, then it is something internal to the transmission. So have a competent transmission shop diagnose it for you.
I purchased an 85' 318i with similar symptoms explained by previous owner. The shift knob felt extremely "sloppy" to me so I bought the car on a hunch.. Shift tower mounts. They are cheap. And both on this ol' gal were cracked/broken. Easy to replace on my model. Didn't need to remove driveshaft or anything to crazy. Its worth a quick look, to rule out. -chris
