I have had my tire pressure checked several times and after leaving the light remains on. What could this mean?

Go to a tire shop, there is a special tool they use to reset the the system, or they would let you know if there is a problem or not.

6 years is a tad bit soon for TPMS sensor failures, but if they used old stock when your car was assembled new, you could be seeing the light cause the batteries are giving out on the sensors. So do what Rowefast suggested and have a tire shop test them.
