Why does my car shut off when I stop/break?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 ford focus. It shuts off when I stop, but then starts right back up; it starts
up with a bit of a struggle (I was told that the starter may need to be replaced.). The
engine light came on, I had it hooked up to a diagnostic machine and was told that the
light coming on was an error, so the mechanic reversed something so the light wouldn't
come on anymore. After that the car died, had the battery checked (sure enough it was
bad), replaced the battery, and now it's shutting off when I stop. Please help!

Possibly dirty/faulty idle air control valve or dirty throttle plate

Could be but less likely. Stopped up fuel filter would give you worse drive ability issues.
