Question type: Maintenance & Repair

L322 2009 4.4 in Middle East. Cooling fan has become loud, I assume that the viscous coupling is becoming permanently viscous. but... temp gauge shows no over heating ad it uses about 1 litre of water a week. Even so, today after 20 mins running, engine dropped to 0rpm and tried to restart, in traffic three times. Then in parking garage started knocking at low revs, then cut out when engaging gear. Now will turn over bu not start.
I'm guessing crank shaft sensor delaminating but that doesn't eplain the fan. It smells very hot but then it was 40C outside. water not boiling over and is pressurised.

Update: started fine this morning bu cooling fan still ran whilst cold. Running at 4000rpm for a few seconds stopped that behaviour but it wouldn't yesterday when engine was hot. Does it sound like poor coolant circulation to you? Pressure still in coolant and level is fine. Temperature gauge performs normally. What else would cause idle stalling and progressive knocking at low revs, eventual non-restart, when hot and after running for 30 minutes in hot traffic?
