Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Does anyone have an issue w/ his truck when turning front wheels and the 4x4 engaged?  I feel like I have the hand brake applied.  Everything looks fine when I drive straight forward.  It was very different a month ago.  My Ranger has only 11000 Km.

i have a 2008 4x4 ranger ext cab with only 28000 kms, with 4x4 engaged in mud or soft sufaces you dont feel as much of a difference, but on harder surfaces it handles a lot different when steering, like all 4x4's doo.if it feels ok in a straight line i would not worry about it.the harder the turn the more your gonna feel it when 4 wheeling.

I find large numbers of warning to not engage 4WD where you have good traction, on dry roads - the drive line will bind up due to differences in turning radius between front and rear wheels, giving you that feeling of "brakes on" or severe dragging in the drive train.

All ford mechanics and 3rd party mechanics have told me this is normal with the ford ranger of any year, mostly because of how the 4wd is set up. as Mach37 said, it will bind up and feel like it is dragging. Very normal though. Warning though: do not use on concrete or warm temperatures unless absolutely needed, or it'll completely kill the t-case and transmission.
