2009 Subaru Outback 3.0R stall with no CEL

2009 Subaru Outback 3.0R stall with no CEL - happened at highway speed and
while stopped. Hard restart both times. Would not start in the morning once.
Tried again a few days later and started. Took to mechanic but unable to
reproduce problem and no CEL or stored codes. What could be the culprit that
wouldn't trigger a CEL or stored code?
