Oil coming from the back of the engine, is either the oil pressure sending unit...or a problem with the oil filter, or the rear main seal on the crankshaft. The engine shut off due to lack of oil pressure. That was a good thing.

If all the oil suddenly leaked out it could be catastrophic engine failure causing a hole in the block. Did it make any unusual noises just prior to it shutting down? Could also be a hole in the oil pan caused by running over a piece of derbris or could be what Rowefast posted.
