I have a 2009 sante fe 3.3L won't start, why?

I see smoke coming from around the starter when I boost the battery. This is
with a new battery car will not turn over. starter gets HOT!

Sounds like loose connections at starter check and tighten connections.

Or possibly a crossed wire
