When your "check engine" light comes on a trouble code is stored in the car's computer. Under the dash, usually near the steering column, is the ALDL connector. It's a large black kinda square looking male plug. Your shop or local auto parts store (Advance, Auto Zone, etc.) can plug into it & scan the computer with their scan tool. Advance & Auto Zone do it for free. This will give you the trouble code & an explanation of what sensors or systems are involved. Even if the "check engine" light went out the code is still stored in the computer & can be retrieved for 60 ignition cycles after the light went out. HTH. -Jim
