2009 Chevrolet Malibu is not engaging always in reverse or forward. There are no sounds like parts grinding. What kind of problem would this be? Is it a mechanical or electrical problem?

First have the transmission fluid checked by a mechanic,if fluid level is correct and there is no engine light on,it will not be electrical,it will be mechanical issue.
